Have you ever had a patient with 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀 before? What did the treatment consist of? 👩🏻‍⚕️𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁!

Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix which is located in your RLQ. Pain usually begins in the mid umbilicus and gradually localized into the RLQ, known as 𝗠𝗰𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆’𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁.

🩺With appendicitis you can have most GI symptoms such as decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. Absent or a decrease in bowel sounds can also occur due to inflammation that can lead to obstruction. Just try to remember your GI system is out of wack!

🩺Fevers can also occur due to the inflammatory process and potential infection.

⚠️ 𝗡𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥 apply heat to the abdomen when you suspect appendicitis. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀? Comment below if you know the answer!

Before we jump in, I know it’s been a bit since I’ve been on here but after having my twin boys and a hiatus from The RN Educator I am back and more excited than ever to get back sharing a ton of nursing content with you.

Let’s hit it off with our most commonly used Asthma meds. Asthma is a chronic , inflammatory disorder that can cause intermittent airway obstruction by either inflammation or hyper-responsiveness.

•Albuterol, the most commonly used rescue medication, helps treat a cure exacerbations. It does this by decreasing the bronchospasm that’s taking place in the airway, particularly the bronchioles.

•Medications such as atropine or ipratropium are sometimes used in conjunction with albuterol to help block the parasympathetic system from continuous bronchospasms. Essentially it also relieves bronchospasms.

• Salmeterol is exactly what the class medication suggests. It is a LONG acting beta agonist which means it takes longer to work and would not be beneficial for a short or acute exacerbation. This medication is mostly used for management and maintenance of asthma. It’s functions includes preventing exacerbations and reducing the use of albuterol.

Hello, hello my nursing friends! 👋🏼Today we are talking 𝐀𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐞 over on the blog. We are going over what this arrhythmia means for your patient, what nursing interventions you will be performing and what treatment does this dysrhythmia requires.

Commonly referred to as “flatline”, this cardiac abnormal rhythm signifies cessation of all electrical and mechanical activity in the heart. Start compressions and grab the EPI because that heart is not beating!

Initial treatments for this patient will include:
💔 𝐂𝐏𝐑
💔 𝐄𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞

This is because asystole is NOT a shockable rhythm. We need to get the heart beating STAT and try to get it into a shockable rhythm. Once we have a shockable rhythm such as V-fib or V-tach then we can shock! ⚡️

Ever given a medication and totally forgot to check back in on your patient? Or maybe you didn’t forget but just didn’t have the time to circle back! You figured it would help them and they would feel better and you can just do your assessment a few hours later. I bet it’s happened to you...

BUT don’t forget that after medication administrations you should be re-assessing your patient for any changes in symptoms(especially PRN meds).

Not all medications reach their desired effects but it’s important to re-assess your patient and document if symptoms have improved, worsened or remained the same. This is part of figuring out what works for your client and what doesn’t.

Hello, hello my nursing friends! Got another one over on the blog for you...We are talkin’ all things 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐬.Yup! That emergency trolly you hope and pray you never have to use, well, you’re learning about what’s in it today. At least inside the medication drawer, that is.

How many of you know what’s really in the crash cart and what each med is used for, it’s contraindications, how to mix them, side effects to look out for.... I bet not many of you.

Don’t worry. That’s completely normal when you start out as a nurse or if you don’t use a crash cart very frequently but at one point you have to become prepared and knowledgeable about your units crash cart.

I’m never going to forget my first emergency as an ICU nurse. My gosh— I was so nervous my hands were literally 𝙎𝙃𝘼𝙆𝙄𝙉𝙂! I had an amazing night shift team who knew I was just off orientation and helped me in every way they could but the whole time I felt like I was literally reacting on adrenaline. My flight or fight response was activated to its max power. Thankfully the patient was fine and pulled through, however, later in my shift I took a second, went to the bathroom and cried.

Yes, I cried and I’m not afraid to say it. My emotions were so heightened and so many things were going through my mind. “Did I do a good job? Could I have done better? I should’ve known more about that medication! Did I miss something?” Not only was this my first true emergency but I never imagined I would feel so unprepared. To be honest, I don’t think you are ever truly prepared for your very first emergency. You must experience it to understand the rush and learn what you need to improve on.

I realized that day I needed to learn all my emergency medications. I was just off orientation and yes, I had seen emergencies but never had experienced one on any of my patients so I wasn’t really exposed to many crash cart meds. I never wanted to feel lost or doubtful in an emergency again. So, I took it upon myself to learn all the crash cart meds.
